Do I know that I am saved because I am living a good enough life? It is true that John writes, “He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked” (1 John:2:6He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
See All...). That is the standard—but who would dare to say that he walks as Christ walked? We are not to sin, but at times we do; indeed, we deceive ourselves if we deny that. But Christ never sinned, so how can a sinner be said to walk as Christ walked? Assurance doesn’t come by the life I live, for then I could not have any assurance upon receiving Christ but only after I had lived for Him long enough to “prove” that I was a real Christian. Paul says that one who doesn’t have even one good work is yet truly saved if he believes on Christ. John:5:24Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
See All... says of those who believe, that they have “passed from death unto life.” This happens at the moment of believing on Christ.
"He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him."
—John:3:36He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him.
