Most evangelical Christians who believe in the Rapture of the church to heaven before Antichrist appears have always actively supported the restoration of the Jews to the Promised Land. They have been confident that it would eventually occur, even when from all earthly appearances it seemed impossible. They based their faith upon biblical prophecies that clearly foretold the rebirth of Israel in her own land in the last days. One of the early supporters of Israel was William E. Blackstone, a descendant of prominent eighteenth-century English jurist William Blackstone. From studying the Bible, he became convinced that the Jewish people would indeed be restored to their land and that this event would precede the return of Christ to earth, even though it seemed highly unlikely in his day.

In 1878, Blackstone produced a 96-page book titled Jesus Is Coming, later enlarged to 256 pages. The book was translated into more than forty-two languages, including Hebrew and Yiddish. The Hebrew version, published in 1925, bore the title Hofaat Ha-Mashiach Ha-Shin – The Second Appearance of the Messiah.

It has often been said that the simplest answer to the challenge “Why do you believe in God?” is just two words: “The Jew!” Blackstone repeatedly said, “If anyone desires to know our place in God’s chronology…look at Israel.”
