DAILY READINGS: Leviticus 17-18; Psalm:119:145-176 [145] (KOPH.) I cried with my whole heart; hear me, O Lord: I will keep thy statutes. [146] I cried unto thee; save me, and I shall keep thy testimonies. [147] I prevented the dawning of the morning, and cried: I hoped in thy word. [148] Mine eyes prevent the night watches, that I might meditate in thy word. [149] Hear my voice according unto thy lovingkindness: O LORD, quicken me according to thy judgment. [150] They draw nigh that follow after mischief: they are far from thy law. [151] Thou art near, O LORD; and all thy commandments are truth. [152] Concerning thy testimonies, I have known of old that thou hast founded them for ever. [153] (RESH.) Consider mine affliction, and deliver me: for I do not forget thy law. [154] Plead my cause, and deliver me: quicken me according to thy word. [155] Salvation is far from the wicked: for they seek not thy statutes. [156] Great are thy tender mercies, O LORD: quicken me according to thy judgments. [157] Many are my persecutors and mine enemies; yet do I not decline from thy testimonies. [158] I beheld the transgressors, and was grieved; because they kept not thy word. [159] Consider how I love thy precepts: quicken me, O LORD, according to thy lovingkindness. [160] Thy word is true from the beginning: and every one of thy righteous judgments endureth for ever. [161] (SCHIN.) Princes have persecuted me without a cause: but my heart standeth in awe of thy word. [162] I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil. [163] I hate and abhor lying: but thy law do I love. [164] Seven times a day do I praise thee because of thy righteous judgments. [165] Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them. [166] LORD, I have hoped for thy salvation, and done thy commandments. [167] My soul hath kept thy testimonies; and I love them exceedingly. [168] I have kept thy precepts and thy testimonies: for all my ways are before thee. [169] (TAU.) Let my cry come near before thee, O Lord: give me understanding according to thy word. [170] Let my supplication come before thee: deliver me according to thy word. [171] My lips shall utter praise, when thou hast taught me thy statutes. [172] My tongue shall speak of thy word: for all thy commandments are righteousness. [173] Let thine hand help me; for I have chosen thy precepts. [174] I have longed for thy salvation, O LORD; and thy law is my delight. [175] Let my soul live, and it shall praise thee; and let thy judgments help me. [176] I have gone astray like a lost sheep; seek thy servant; for I do not forget thy commandments.

[40] And they sat down in ranks, by hundreds, and by fifties. [41] And when he had taken the five loaves and the two fishes, he looked up to heaven, and blessed, and brake the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before them; and the two fishes divided he among them all. [42] And they did all eat, and were filled. [43] And they took up twelve baskets full of the fragments, and of the fishes. [44] And they that did eat of the loaves were about five thousand men. [45] And straightway he constrained his disciples to get into the ship, and to go to the other side before unto Bethsaida, while he sent away the people. [46] And when he had sent them away, he departed into a mountain to pray. [47] And when even was come, the ship was in the midst of the sea, and he alone on the land. [48] And he saw them toiling in rowing; for the wind was contrary unto them: and about the fourth watch of the night he cometh unto them, walking upon the sea, and would have passed by them. [49] But when they saw him walking upon the sea, they supposed it had been a spirit, and cried out: [50] For they all saw him, and were troubled. And immediately he talked with them, and saith unto them, Be of good cheer: it is I; be not afraid. [51] And he went up unto them into the ship; and the wind ceased: and they were sore amazed in themselves beyond measure, and wondered. [52] For they considered not the miracle of the loaves: for their heart was hardened. [53] And when they had passed over, they came into the land of Gennesaret, and drew to the shore. [54] And when they were come out of the ship, straightway they knew him, [55] And ran through that whole region round about, and began to carry about in beds those that were sick, where they heard he was. [56] And whithersoever he entered, into villages, or cities, or country, they laid the sick in the streets, and besought him that they might touch if it were but the border of his garment: and as many as touched him were made whole.

We look forward to special events with anticipation but the day after can often turn out to be anticlimactic. The Christan experience is different though. Today’s enjoyment of Christ in His Word, prayer and service should not be the summit of our experience. Each day He offers new displays of His grace to us. Furthermore, He promises that eternity will hold increasing revelations of His grace. Each remarkable experience will be followed by another. Neither time nor eternity will exhaust His grace and His demonstration of it. —George Ferrier
