It is a matter of indisputable record that Pope Pius XII never spoke out publicly to rebuke Hitler for attempting to exterminate the Jews. Had he done so forcefully, and had he forbidden Roman Catholics (who were a large percentage of the German military, Gestapo, SS, etc.) to participate in the mistreatment and extermination of Jews under pain of excommunication (should murderers remain in good standing in the Church?), he might have saved millions from Hitler’s ovens. His defenders claim that Pius XII worked against the Holocaust behind the scenes. The Nazi archives, however, have yielded no evidence whatsoever to support this assertion — and access to the Vatican archives is denied to truth seekers.
