Scientific Verification
To a large extent, the hygienic laws God gave Israel through Moses preserved Jewish communities during the Middle Ages from the various plagues that swept through the civilized world. Jews were even persecuted because they seemed immune and were therefore accused of putting this curse on the Gentile populace. It took medicine more than 3,000 years to catch up to Moses, even in something so simple as the need to wash one’s hands. It was only a few decades ago that the medical profession recognized the preventive health benefits of circumcision, which God gave to Abraham nearly 4,000 years ago. Only recently was it also discovered that on the eighth day after birth, the day prescribed in the Bible for circumcision, the clotting factor in the newborn’s blood, having dropped right after birth, is at the highest level that it will ever be. The Bible, of course, is not intended to be a science reference manual. It deals with something far more important. It does, however, make many factual statements about the universe that reflect a wisdom far beyond the time and culture in which it was written. Some of these insights have only recently been confirmed by modern science, and none of them has been proved wrong. That in itself is a remarkable witness to inspiration not found in other scriptures.
For comparison, read anything written at the same time that the books of the Old Testament (or of the New) were written. The difference is like night and day. The Qur’an, for example, written more than 2,000 years after the earliest books in the Bible, contains numerous unscientific statements and superstitions and treats primitive Arab customs in dress and diet of Muhammad’s time as inspired by Allah and obligatory upon Muslims even today.
The contrast between other scriptures, which reflect the superstitious, unscientific views of their time, and the supernatural validity of the Bible cannot be denied. In a day when it was believed that the earth sat on the back of a tortoise floating in a cosmic sea, the Bible said God “hangeth the earth upon nothing” (Job:26:7He stretcheth out the north over the empty place, and hangeth the earth upon nothing.
See All...). What it says about clouds and rain is remarkable: “He [God] bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds…[and maketh] a way for the lightning…to cause it to rain on the earth” (Job:26:8He bindeth up the waters in his thick clouds; and the cloud is not rent under them.
See All...; 38:25-26). Molecules of water are, in fact, bound together in a way that is unique among all substances. Indeed, it is this peculiar molecular bonding that allows clouds and raindrops to form. Moreover, as the Bible says, the electric charge connected with lightning plays a key role in causing rain. These facts were only discovered in this century, yet the Bible stated them 3,500 years ago.
