The AHP, which claims to be involved in the science of psychology, advertised that 1986 convention in Shaman’s Drum: A Journal of Experiential Shamanism. A glance at any issue of Shaman’s Drum reveals the heavy involvement of psychologists. A typical issue of Shaman’s Drum contains such articles as “Learning to Trust the Spirits” and promotes the most primitive and demonic occultism as liberating truth. Consider the following descriptions beneath the illustrations in a recent article titled “Handling Hungry Spirits: Shamanic Rituals of the Embera”:

“A young haibana…chants to invoke the hai [spirits]…. A girl is painted in the snake design…who will serve as hostess for the hai [spirits] during a curing. Dressed in beads and a traditional loincloth, the haibana holds one of his shamanic staffs as he offers the spirits commercial alcohol and imported Marlboro cigarettes. Aceite passes a live snake three times over a patient so that it will absorb her disease.”
