A lengthy discussion followed. Gould concluded, “We all left satisfied, but I certainly felt bemused by . . . my role as a Jewish agnostic trying to reassure a group of Catholic [1] priests that evolution remained both true and entirely consistent with religious belief.” Religious belief is a vague term into which almost anything could fit. One cannot do that with biblical Christianity, which the Bible alone clearly defines. This is a major reason why evangelical Christians are so maligned. They simply follow the fundamentals of biblical Christianity, as we expect a CPA to follow the fundamentals of sound accounting principles in issuing certified financial statements for the corporate Board of Directors and to the stockholders. Not to do so would be a breach of trust. Why should religious leaders be held to any lesser standard? This is one of the many reasons why this book avoids any discussions about religion and only defends biblical Christianity.
