Regarding “taking up the cross,” the primary application was to those of Christ’s day. He said that they had to take up their cross. If they would be true to Him, they had to realize that they would be crucified beside Him on their own crosses. Of course, that was not possible, and they all forsook Him and fled. Today there is a different application. We are to deny self and instead are to glory in the Cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by which the world is crucified unto us and we to the world.
"And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me."
—Luke:9:23And he said to them all, If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.
