In attempting to embrace and deny self at the same time, you end up with contradiction and fallacy. You try valiantly to rescue self-esteem/respect by saying that it must result from recognizing that God created us in His image. On the contrary, we have no more reason to esteem and respect ourselves because God created us than we have to esteem ourselves because God created the universe around us. We had no more to do with creating ourselves (including the new creation in Christ) than we had with creating the remainder of the universe, and thus have no basis from either for esteeming or respecting ourselves. —TBC
