Black pastors continue to petition president re: 'gay marriage' [Excerpts]

A coalition of African-American pastors and leaders is visiting states important to President Obama to voice their opposition to same-sex "marriage." Most are Democrats, but are against the party's endorsement of such unions.

Bishop David Hall of Temple Church of God in Christ in Memphis, Tennessee tells OneNewsNow there is a strong Christian principle at stake.

"We believe that if we move out and publicly state our dissatisfaction with the president's support of those things that it will truly awaken the black electorate and those Christian persons in the black community who have for so long supported family and its maintenance," he says.

Hall stresses it is not the focus of The Coalition of African-American Pastors to convince people not to vote for the President, but rather to ratchet up support for traditional values.

"Our struggle in civil rights has been for human dignity and for rights, etcetera, and we don't see the parallel the gay coalitions [try to make] to identify their purpose with the human rights and the civil rights struggle," the CAAP spokesman remarks.

Then there is the moral issue with same-sex marriage. Bishop Hall points out, "The Bible is against homosexual marriage;" members of the Coalition read it that way, and "they understand it that way."
