May 15 - Choice Gleanings
DAILY READINGS: Num:26:52And the LORD spake unto Moses, saying,
See All... to 27:23; Prov:23:12-35 [12] Apply thine heart unto instruction, and thine ears to the words of knowledge.
[13] Withhold not correction from the child: for if thou beatest him with the rod, he shall not die.
[14] Thou shalt beat him with the rod, and shalt deliver his soul from hell.
[15] My son, if thine heart be wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.
[16] Yea, my reins shall rejoice, when thy lips speak right things.
[17] Let not thine heart envy sinners: but be thou in the fear of the LORD all the day long.
[18] For surely there is an end; and thine expectation shall not be cut off.
[19] Hear thou, my son, and be wise, and guide thine heart in the way.
[20] Be not among winebibbers; among riotous eaters of flesh:
[21] For the drunkard and the glutton shall come to poverty: and drowsiness shall clothe a man with rags.
[22] Hearken unto thy father that begat thee, and despise not thy mother when she is old.
[23] Buy the truth, and sell it not; also wisdom, and instruction, and understanding.
[24] The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.
[25] Thy father and thy mother shall be glad, and she that bare thee shall rejoice.
[26] My son, give me thine heart, and let thine eyes observe my ways.
[27] For a whore is a deep ditch; and a strange woman is a narrow pit.
[28] She also lieth in wait as for a prey, and increaseth the transgressors among men.
[29] Who hath woe? who hath sorrow? who hath contentions? who hath babbling? who hath wounds without cause? who hath redness of eyes?
[30] They that tarry long at the wine; they that go to seek mixed wine.
[31] Look not thou upon the wine when it is red, when it giveth his colour in the cup, when it moveth itself aright.
[32] At the last it biteth like a serpent, and stingeth like an adder.
[33] Thine eyes shall behold strange women, and thine heart shall utter perverse things.
[34] Yea, thou shalt be as he that lieth down in the midst of the sea, or as he that lieth upon the top of a mast.
[35] They have stricken me, shalt thou say, and I was not sick; they have beaten me, and I felt it not: when shall I awake? I will seek it yet again.
See All...; Luke:1:57-80 [57] Now Elisabeth's full time came that she should be delivered; and she brought forth a son.
[58] And her neighbours and her cousins heard how the Lord had shewed great mercy upon her; and they rejoiced with her.
[59] And it came to pass, that on the eighth day they came to circumcise the child; and they called him Zacharias, after the name of his father.
[60] And his mother answered and said, Not so; but he shall be called John.
[61] And they said unto her, There is none of thy kindred that is called by this name.
[62] And they made signs to his father, how he would have him called.
[63] And he asked for a writing table, and wrote, saying, His name is John. And they marvelled all.
[64] And his mouth was opened immediately, and his tongue loosed, and he spake, and praised God.
[65] And fear came on all that dwelt round about them: and all these sayings were noised abroad throughout all the hill country of Judaea.
[66] And all they that heard them laid them up in their hearts, saying, What manner of child shall this be! And the hand of the Lord was with him.
[67] And his father Zacharias was filled with the Holy Ghost, and prophesied, saying,
[68] Blessed be the Lord God of Israel; for he hath visited and redeemed his people,
[69] And hath raised up an horn of salvation for us in the house of his servant David;
[70] As he spake by the mouth of his holy prophets, which have been since the world began:
[71] That we should be saved from our enemies, and from the hand of all that hate us;
[72] To perform the mercy promised to our fathers, and to remember his holy covenant;
[73] The oath which he sware to our father Abraham,
[74] That he would grant unto us, that we being delivered out of the hand of our enemies might serve him without fear,
[75] In holiness and righteousness before him, all the days of our life.
[76] And thou, child, shalt be called the prophet of the Highest: for thou shalt go before the face of the Lord to prepare his ways;
[77] To give knowledge of salvation unto his people by the remission of their sins,
[78] Through the tender mercy of our God; whereby the dayspring from on high hath visited us,
[79] To give light to them that sit in darkness and in the shadow of death, to guide our feet into the way of peace.
[80] And the child grew, and waxed strong in spirit, and was in the deserts till the day of his shewing unto Israel.
See All...
…Thou hast kept the good wine until now. John:2:10And saith unto him, Every man at the beginning doth set forth good wine; and when men have well drunk, then that which is worse: but thou hast kept the good wine until now.
See All...
When they were filled… John:6:12When they were filled, he said unto his disciples, Gather up the fragments that remain, that nothing be lost.
See All...
Are these two "signs" not meant to be seen together? Sufficient bread and choicest wine. Our Lord, His joy, and the new life He offers are a heavenly vintage, rich and ceaseless, eclipsing the world's best offerings in both endless quantity and surpassing quality. As for the bread, He is our staff of life in a desert place, strength for today and sufficiency for all our tomorrows. Take all you wish. Eat 'til you're full. Yet there is more.
—S. McEachern
Jesus! All perfections rise and end in Thee;
Brightness of God’s glory Thou, eternally,
Favored beyond measure they Thy face who see;
May we gracious Saviour, share this ecstasy. —D. MacGregor
