Even though Hagar had become Abram's second wife, the angel of the Lord addressed her as Sarai's maid. She represents the law given
at Mount Sinai, and therefore she could never be truly joined with faith, for Abram represents faith, and Sarai, grace. The law can only
be handmaid to grace. Mankind so often tries to be joined to faith by works, but God consistently reminds us, "by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified" (Gal:2:16Knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the law, but by the faith of Jesus Christ, even we have believed in Jesus Christ, that we might be justified by the faith of Christ, and not by the works of the law: for by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified.
