Is materialism dead? The issue of infinite regress (a designer must be more complex than the thing designed, so who designed the designer who designed the designer, etc.) is like a dog chasing its tail. There had to be a beginning to the universe. However, it was a struggle for many scientists to admit this obvious fact. One of those for whom this admission was the most difficult was Robert Jastrow, founder of the Goddard Space Institute that sent Pioneer and Voyager into space.
