In his debate with Lennox, Dawkins attempted to whitewash the sordid history of atheism as it has been revealed in the past few decades by saying that the denial of God was only peripheral to communism and fascism and not that important. On the contrary, Victor Aksiuchitz, who knew Lenin well, wrote: “Lenin could not mention religion without damnation, for he was possessed by the need of pathological reviling of the Divine . . . every religious idea about a certain god [was] the most dangerous abomination, the foulest pest. . . . As soon as it came to religion, Lenin . . . fell into frenzy and madness. . . . In Lenin’s opinion destroying religion was the most important purpose of the communist regime. Lenin launched the bloodiest and most massive religious persecution in history….”
