Christopher Hitchens and his fellow atheists declare it to be unjust for Christ, the innocent one, to suffer the eternal punishment that we, the guilty, deserve. When one reads the Bible carefully, from Genesis to Revelation, an understanding begins to emerge. God had pronounced a penalty upon Adam and Eve and all of their descendants. He could not “just forgive,” as Hitchens and Dawkins insist He could have done, any more than a judge sitting on the bench in one of our courts could “just forgive” the guilty one standing before him. The judge, whether God or man, is bound by the law. He cannot override it, as much as he may desire to do so.
