The Mass and all Roman Catholic ritual is a form of magic. The sacraments are not intended as mere symbols of a spiritual reality, but, like voodoo and ritual magic, they are perceived as possessing intrinsic power. Their very performance transmits grace. To deny that is to be anathematized. The Council of Trent decreed and Vatican II reconfirmed that—

“If anyone says that by the sacraments of the New Law [i.e., the Roman Catholic Code of Canon Law] grace is not conferred ex opere operato [i.e., in the very act itself], but that faith alone in the divine promise is sufficient to obtain grace, let him be anathema.”

Nor does Catholic ritual confer some minor “grace” to help one through a difficult day. It is salvation that is conferred:

“If anyone says that the sacraments of the New Law are not necessary for salvation but … that without them … men obtain from God through faith alone the grace of justification … let him be anathema.”
