The heat was not left off for lack of funds. Mother Teresa had millions of dollars on deposit, so she could have afforded proper heating, furnishings, and all the medical attention ever needed. Yet she did without all of these “luxuries,” enforced the same rule upon her “Sisters of Charity,” and deprived her patients as well. No doubt, just as she hoped to earn her way to heaven through her own deprivation and suffering, so Mother Teresa hoped to help her patients reach heaven through the suffering she imposed upon them. The morgue in Calcutta has this inscription on a wall: “I am leaving for heaven today.”
