“According to a documentary aired on Iranian television, what occurred in Fatima, Portugal, was not a Christian miracle but a Muslim one. In fact, Iranian TV affirms that it was not the Virgin Mary who appeared to the three shepherd children, but Fatima herself, daughter of Muhammed, the prophet of Islam. The program recounts how the apparitions occurred and how Fatima has become a place of pilgrimage for faithful from around the world. Among other images are scenes from the pilgrimages to Fatima of Paul VI and John Paul II.
The Lefebvrist bulletin, Si Si No No, of July 1996 claims “the Iranian television program reflects an Islamic strategy to ‘co-opt for Islam’ the Madonna’s prophecy that Russia will be converted.” It says, “Several years back, not long before he died, the Ayatollah Khomeini, ruler of Iran, sent a letter to President [Mikhail] Gorbachev, then leader of the Soviet Union, inviting him…to convert to Allah. Shiite Iran is in competition with Sunnite Turkey to win over the vast Turkish-Moslem populations of Central Asia…. To present to these masses the conversion of Russia to Islam as…’predicted’ in a vision in 1917 by the ‘daughter of the Prophet’…would have its advantages in propaganda terms.”
