Rai·son d’ê·tre
I took three foreign languages (French, Italian, and Latin) in my school days and it was only by an incredible act of mercy by each of my teachers that they moved me on after literally suffering my inept participation for a year. It wasn’t that I didn't want to learn those languages, there was just a mental blockade that I couldn’t get past. How hard did I try? The staff at my college language listening center didn’t believe I was registered in a dorm. Why? I always had a sleeping bag with me that sustained me through hours, and I mean hours, of listening to language tapes.
Yet, there was one French term that stuck with me then, and is wonderfully significant for me today. I’ll let you figure out how to pronounce rai·son d’ê·tre. It translates as a person’s purpose or reason for living. It’s why they do things. It’s the most important thing in his or her life.
Jesus is my rai·son d’ê·tre. I pray He’s yours.
